nullDC is an open source Sega Dreamcast and NAOMI emulator for Windows, developed by drk||Raziel (currently under the nickname skmp) and ZeZu. It was released under the MIT license.

Download the nullDC and play a wide range of games on your computer or phone. We have different versions available, but it's to download the latest one. The installation process is straightforward and there is nothing to worry about. Once you are done with it you can download ROMs and load them using the emulator options.
DEmul is the best Dreamcast emulator for Windows 10 that you can currently use. It provides the best support for Dreamcast games and able to play hundreds of games. There has been an immense amount of development behind this emulator. But, there are have been no updates or patches after 2018.

nullDC requires DirectX 9.0c, Visual C++ runtime libraries and optionally WinPcap for modem emulation. BIOS files are also needed. It has a plugin architecture, with several alternative implementations (some ported from Chankast) for graphics, sound, reading games burned to CD-ROMs (it cannot read GD-ROMs directly) or disk image files, memory cards, etc.

The developers went on to produce a follow-up emulator, Reicast, for Android.

History

The emulator was first announced on February 19, 2006.

On August 25, 2006 the first screenshots were released, the authors were revealed to be ZeZu (programmer of Icarus, a Dreamcast emulator which was never released) and drk||Raziel, it was explained that the emulator would aim at compatibility more than speed, and would use a plugin structure to allow other authors to contribute.

The first version (v1.0.0 BETA) was released on April 1, 2007, and proved itself to be the Dreamcast emulator with the highest compatibility to date.

The second version (beta 1.5) was released on November 4, 2007. It added support for game pads, but the sound did not work and had other bugs (in the author's words, it was 'crashy, buggy, shitty').

A third version (beta 1.6) was released after few days, on November 7, 2007. This version included a new audio plugin and several bug fixes.

A new plugin and video shader for nullDC were released on January 10, 2008, to fix some display bugs and add the support for stereoscopy as per the specifics of the NVIDIA stereo 3D drivers.

Version 1.0.3 was released on August 20, 2008, nine months after the last beta 1.6 and bringing speed improvements, bugfixes and new features like the fog effect emulation, support for DreamcastVMU and experimental DSP sound effects added to nullAICA plugin. The release is the first introducing NAOMI arcade system emulation with a separate version of the emulator. Gamepad support has been temporarily removed in this version, but it will be included in later versions.

Version 1.0.4 r22 was released May 9, 2010, coinciding with drk||raziel's discontinuation with the project.^[2] He also made the source code available for others to continue the project. The latest revision of this version is 1.0.4 r147, available on the Google Code repository.

Demul is the emulator that we’ve had best results with here at VirtualDreamcast.com. Downloading and configuring it can seem daunting if you’ve never played with an emulator before, but follow the steps here and you’ll be playing Dreamcast games before you know it.

First of all, we need to download the emulator. You can do that by visiting this page. Sadly it seems like the emulator hasn’t been updated since 2013, but it still works well so don’t concern yourself with that. The emulator downloads as a .rar file. You will need to extract the files from this archive to any convenient location on your PC. Rar files are similar to Zip files, but Windows does not support them without extra software. If you’re not familiar with dealing with .rar files, we recommend you follow these simple tutorials for 7-zip, a free tool that can open .rar files.

Once you’ve managed to extract the files, the next step is to copy your Demul compatible Dreamcast BIOS images. Unfortunately these files are under copyright so we can’t link to them directly, but the file you need is called “dc.zip” and it should contain the following files. If you’re familiar with file hashing tools, you can check that the files are the correct ones by comparing the MD5 hash numbers we’ve provided too.

If you need an introduction to file hashes and how to compare them, there’s a beginners guide here. Once you have obtained these files, create a sub-folder called “roms” and copy the zip file into there. You don’t need to extract the files from the zip archive.

With that step complete, you can start the emulator for the first time. When you do this, an error message will appear saying that BIOS & Plugins are not configured. The emulator will take you directly to the configuration window, so lets look at that now. Click on the picture below if you need to enlarge it.

Most of the options can be left as the defaults, but we’ll go through them all now just for the sake of completeness.

Video Plugin – You have two choices here, gpuDX10 and gpuDX11. As you might have guessed, gpuDX10 will work on DirectX 10 graphics hardware, while gpuDX11 will only work on hardware that is DirectX 11 capable. DirectX 11 mode works better in some games, but can be more demanding on hardware and is not supported by all graphics cards. It is probably worth selecting if your PC can handle it.

GD-ROM Plugin – This is the plugin that emulates the Dreamcast’s disc drive. You have three choices, gdrCHD, gdrDemul and gdrImage. Typically you will use gdrImage. GdrImage is compatible both with Discjuggler CD image (typically these have a .cdi file extension) and 1:1 dumps of a Dreamcast GD-ROMs (typically these come in .gdi format with several other .bin or .raw files).
